Home Fire Prevention

An estimated 329,500 home structure fires were reported across the U.S. in 2024, causing roughly 2,920 civilian deaths, 8,920 injuries, and $11.4 billion in direct property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Cooking is the single leading cause, followed by heating equipment, electrical failures, smoking materials, and intentional fires.

Smoke Alarms

  • Install a smoke alarm inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
  • Test alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
  • Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 8–10 years.

Everyday Prevention Habits

  • Never leave cooking unattended, and keep anything flammable at least three feet from the stove.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys inspected annually.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach.
  • Don't overload outlets or extension cords.

Have a Plan, Not Just Alarms

Working alarms only help if your household also has a practiced escape plan — see our Fire Escape Planning guide for how to build one.

For more detailed prevention guidance, see the U.S. Fire Administration's home fire prevention resources.

Be Ready to Respond

Pair prevention with a stocked fire safety kit so your household is covered on both fronts.
